Abstract ? Corn cobs, na agro-industrial waste of the maize industry, was used as starting material to prepare nanocrystalline cellulose. The method of sulphiric acid hydrolysis accompanied with ultrasonication was used to prepare nanocrystalline cellulose. The chemical composition of corn cobs was determined at different stages of treatment. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was studied to investigate the morphology of the isolated nanocrystalline cellulose. The results indicated that the hemicellulose and lignin were removed extensively from the extrscted cellulose. TEM images showed spherical or elliptic granules of nanocrystalline cellulose with diameters ranged from 5 to 25 nm length from 5 to 30 nm, giving an aspect ratio of 0.8 to 1.6. |
